Is EDM the future of Bollywood songs?

With the emergence of festivals like Sunburn and Supersonic, the popularity of Electronic Dance Music (EDM) is witnessing a never-seen-before high. So much so, the genre is now making its presence felt in Bollywood as well.
While super-hit tracks like Sultan’s Baby Ko Bass Pasand Hai and Kar Gayi Chull (Kapoor & Sons) have elements of EDM, almost all the tracks of Udta Punjab have elements of trance, which is also a part of EDM.

So, EDM going to define the future of Bollywood music? We spoke to some prominent musicians in B-Town.
Udta Punjab composer Amit Trivedi says, “I really like EDM music and follow it a lot. I feel converging EDM with Bollywood music is fine because it definitely adds a new touch. I use a lot of EDM music in my songs.”

Swagger composer Tanishk Bagchi agrees, adding that EDM festivals have helped boost the genre’s popularity in Bollywood. “Exchange of ideas is happening at these fests. As composers, we try and incorporate its elements in our music. EDM adds a fresh flavour to the songs, which is liked by most of us.”

Not that everyone is an EDM fan. For example, Salim of the composer duo Salim-Sulaiman prefers organic sounds. “My taste in music is different. However, I am okay with EDM being implemented with proper structure and lyrics. We have used it in our singles like Ek India Happy Wala (IPL 2016 promotional song) as a part of our experiment.”

On his part, composer Ehsaan Noorani feels that EDM music has reached a saturation point and is on its way out. “Now, every song has a touch of EDM. Ultimately, you hear so much of it that every song starts sounding the same. Even internationally, EDM is on its way out.”

Kalyanji-Anandji’s Anandji has a major grouse against EDM. He feels it’s all about dancing, which is definitely not good for music. “EDM lacks soul. We are always trying to copy others and this is where we go wrong. EDM can only make you dance; which EDM song has stayed evergreen? These songs can never ever stay in our hearts,” he sums up.
